In 2025, Chemnitz will take on the role of European Capital of Culture. For his portrait of the city, photographer Ruediger Glatz turns to its old Sorbian name, Kamenica, invoking the depth and continuity of Chemnitz’s history. His images focus on architectural and urban details that act as visual witnesses, tracing the city’s historical and cultural transformation.
At times abstract and painterly, the photographs form an artistic cityscape shaped by Glatz’s personal perspective. Rendered in sensitive black and white, the series invites curiosity and anticipation for the year in which Chemnitz steps onto the European cultural stage. The body of work was created within the framework of the HALLENKUNST Artist in Residence program
